The Infrastructure Quality Initiative — IQI — continues the development of its Core foundations and the application of the IQI framework to energy infrastructure.
The IQI platform now includes additional publications supporting the justification of the IQI Core and an expanded family of Context Guides for natural gas infrastructure.
IQI Core foundations
- Justification of the Fourteen Invariant IQI Core Quality Factors
- Justification of the Invariant IQI Core Quality Indicators
These publications further examine the foundations of the IQI Core Standard and the role of Quality Factors and Quality Indicators in determining and evidencing the quality state of an infrastructure system.
Natural gas infrastructure
The IQI website now presents a topological view of the natural gas infrastructure chain, connecting major infrastructure segments with their corresponding IQI Context Guides.
Context Guides now available include:
- Onshore Natural Gas Production Zone Infrastructure
- Onshore Natural Gas Main Pipeline Transportation Infrastructure
- Natural Gas Local Distribution Network Infrastructure

The Context Guides apply the IQI Core Standard to different natural gas infrastructure systems and operating contexts, addressing their intended functions, boundaries, interfaces, Quality Factors, Indicators, evidence, and bounded Quality Claims.
Together, these publications continue the development of IQI from a general infrastructure-quality framework toward a connected family of infrastructure-specific applications.

IQI applies the WQI approach to infrastructure systems by describing infrastructure quality as an observed, evidenced, and bounded quality state of an asset or system across its lifecycle.

IQI is a volunteer-run public initiative focused on making the quality of energy infrastructure and its management visible, understandable, and evidence-supported.
Its standards, vocabularies, Context Guides, and other resources are voluntary and non-regulatory.
They do not constitute engineering supervision, regulatory enforcement, certification, legal compliance, or approval of any energy-infrastructure asset or Quality Claim.
IQI is an applied initiative under the Whole-Quality Institute (WQI).
